The place for skiing in Marrakech is Oukaimeden, only 74km outside the city but 3,273m above sea level. Oukaimeden Ski Resort is North Africa's largest ski resort, initially developed by the French and more recently surveyed by international resort planners who aim to improve the infrastructure. Lift passes are cheap, as is the equipment to hire, but an absence of snow can be a slight problem. Between mid-January and mid-February is the safest bet, although the views are great all year round. In good conditions there are up to 20km of runs, the longest of which is 3km. Donkeys can be hired to access terrain not served by lifts, which opens up some impressive steeps and chutes. Otherwise ski touring is available including an ascent/descent of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest mountain.
